When a Writer Decides to Contrast Two Items in an Essay

When a Writer Decides to Contrast Two Items in an EssayWhen a writer decides to contrast two items in an essay, that writer is doing a reverse thought experiment. In this thought experiment, the writer is going to propose a contradiction for one item and a fact for the other item. This can be done with any two items. Here are some examples.- 'This example exhibits an instance of similarity between the golden retrievers' relatives.' - 'These examples exhibit the existence of a significant mathematical relationship.' In these examples, the writer wants to demonstrate the existence of a particular fact or association and also demonstrate that the item being contrasted is actually the same as the other item.- 'The thought of two close relatives often serves as a simple comparison for this thoughtless guy.' - 'The beauty of poetry is its ability to serve as a summary of a thought.' These examples are all examples of how a writer can reverse the order of paragraphs to show the existence of a similar connection in a relationship.- 'The writer believes that the food we eat has a positive impact on our moods and emotions.' - 'A writer will often set up a truth that most people would agree with to then write a misconception, which has another element to contradict the truth. This is usually done with humor.' - 'This example demonstrates the difference between a fact and fiction.'- 'When two facts are matched and then arranged, the result will usually be the same.' - 'When two different things are selected, and then rearranged, the results will often vary.' In each of these examples, the writer is making a true statement and using a twist to make that statement to have a negative, ironic message. As you can see, when a writer decides to contrast two items in an essay, that writer is presenting a deep philosophical point. The purpose of this writing exercise is to show an emotional connection or relationship and then convey that deep connection through reversal of how the t wo items are presented. The writer then concludes that the reader agrees with the arguments in the paragraph that follows. The biggest difference between the short stories and essays is the length of the essay. When a writer compares two items in an essay, the reader can feel the depth of the argument in a short story that is less than sixty pages long. But, the depth of the argument in a short story is far more powerful than a deep philosophical point that is just a little longer.
